On Wednesday 16th December the Primary School welcomed their annual ‘fairy godmother’ Madame Gentil. This wonderful lady works tirelessly throughout the year to help those in need, and Mougins School has collaborated with her for several years. At Christmas time families donate brand new toys which are destined to be distributed to children who spend the festivities in the Lenval Hospital in Nice. Madame Gentil was welcomed by all the students who then sung to her in both French and English. Madame Gentil has seen many of the children growing up and they all have fond memories of her visits to the School. This is a touching and emotional moment for students, staff and our lovely godmother, particularly for those children who live far from grandparents as Madame Gentil is, in some ways, an adopted grandmother, which is evident from the affection they have for her. After a memorable moment she left in a car laden with gifts, ready for delivery to the Hospital.
On 19th November a small group of students from Form 13 at Mougins School, with their Physics teacher, were guests of CERN (European Organisation for Nuclear Research) in Geneva, Switzerland. Thanks to an ex-parent, the group were given privileged access to the site. They were introduced to the Large Hadron Collider Control Centre, the exact place where the beams of particles are monitored. They visited the building where the LHC magnets are assembled and tested and were then taken to the DATA Centre and given a talk by a Computer scientist. Finally they visited the ATLAS experiment which is where the collision of particles occurs. I think the words of one of the students sum up the visit perfectly: “Special thanks to Fofi for showing us around, giving us this once in a lifetime opportunity. Thank you Paola for gathering these talented speakers for us. It truly fed my interest in Physics.”
