The Sport Department

On Wednesday 8th February the PE Department took 8 boys teams from forms 4,5,6,7, & 8 to play football against teams from EBICA school in Sophia Antipolis. All teams thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were pleased with their success. The event was well organised and the code of conduct of all boys who played was excellent. Although there was a competitive element, the games were played in a friendly and fun atmosphere with all boys shaking hands and congratulating each other on their performances at the end of matches. As a result of this success we hope to invite EBICA school here to play football and possibly other sports in the near future. Well done to all the students who played.

The Primary Student Council have been very active since January and enjoy meeting every week on Friday lunchtimes. They organised a ‘Buddy Bench’ every lunch break for children looking to make a new friend and have already hosted 2 fun days this term. On 10th February we enjoyed ‘A favourite Colour Day’ which involved dressing up in your favourite colour and entering a colouring competition. Every entry was amazing and are all on display in the Primary building. The lucky winner was Hugo in Reception. On 10th March an inter house quiz took place during assembly. Each team rose to the challenge but the Red Team ‘Picasso’ won outright. Well done to all the participants.

Sports News

From Michelle Kimberley-Johnson

This year’s Nice to Cannes marathon was run in glorious sunshine, perfect conditions for producing best time. This year, Mougins School entered 4 teams, Staff Ladies, Staff Men, student girls and a mixed team.
The Staff Ladies team once again proved to be super strong, finishing in 31.12’.36’’. This team was comprised of Michelle Kimberley-Johnson, Elisabeth Ward, Steph Glyde, Karen Keeling, Lois Downes and Jo McDonnell. This was the 3rd fastest ladies team and 23rd team overall. The Staff Men’s Team had a great race with newcomer Glen Horsefall starting the course well.

Nikita Jessaibegjans (Form 13) also helped the team to a great finishing time of 3h25’56’’. This team was also comprised of Brian Hickmore, Rob Cooke, Andy Keeling and John Hooker.
The Student Girls’ Team were as reliable as ever, running fantastically with smiles on their faces all the way! They managed an excellent 4h11’53’’. Their team was comprised of Carmel Van der Weide, Eva Soutoul, Charlotte Dean, Chiara Hoppner, Darja Berga and Anastasia Vladimirova.
Our mixed teams this year took a bit of a battering beforehand with illness and injury, but thanks to Kurt and Zoë Roberts stepping in at the last minute, we managed to get a team over the line in an incredibly fast time of 3h44’30’’! An excellent result. Also running in the is team were Lara Scott, Carmen Burgues and Caren Keeling.

Sports Day

A great team of parents prepared and served sandwiches, pastries, oranges and refreshments including coffee, during the Middle and Upper School Sports day in Mandelieu. It was a fantastic day for pupils and parents who came to support their child(ren)!

Nice Cannes Marathon Relay Results

This year’s Marathon relay competition proved to be the toughest and most exciting to date. With 120 km an hour headwinds on the second half of the course, even the Kenyans struggled to get close to their best times!
The biggest battle of the day, however, was seeing which one of the 4 Mougins school teams would cross the line first.

For those unfamiliar with the marathon relay, it is a full marathon split into 6 slightly more manageable stages. Starting in Nice, the first runner completes 8.7 km passing to their 5 fellow team mates waiting along the coastal route to Cannes, completing distances of 3 km, 5.2 km, 8.1 km, 10.8 km and 6.4 km respectively.
In 2012 a combined male staff/student team overtook the staff ladies in the final stage, beating them by 1 min and 30 seconds overall. This year, the Ladies were out for revenge and with the additional competition from a student girls’ team and a student boys’ team, plus a male staff team, the ‘seasoned’ ladies staff team had their work cut out.

The ladies got off to a great start, getting an early lead by some 8
minutes after the first 2 legs. The student boys’ team were hot on the heels of the Men’s team and the girls were keeping a steady pace 9 minutes behind them. At the start of stage 5, the wind was whipping up and so was the adrenaline! With the ladies team setting off 7 seconds ahead of the men’s team, who were in turn 12 seconds ahead of the boys, it was still very much all to play for!

As predicted the final stage would be a sprint finish and with male and female staff teams setting off hand in hand (not for long!!!!), it was to be just that. Out of 394 teams the final results were:
Mougins Ladies 3h 27.34 finishing 50th team overall and 2nd in the ladies category.
Mougins Men 3h 28.57 finishing 52nd team overall and 27th in their category.
Mougins Boy students 3h 36.06 finishing 76th team overall and 33rd in their category.
Mougins Girl students 4h 08.30 finishing 275th team overall and 14th in their category.
Congratulations to all those who took part! It was a fantastic day and we are already planning our team tactics for 2014!
